This modest box is one of the first electronic voting machines in the history of the Congress. Electronic voting was introduced in the House in 1973. Members voted by inserting their voting card into the slot and pressing the appropriate button to indicate "yea," "nay," or "present." The stations also have an "open" indicator, which is lit when a vote is in progress and the system is ready to accept votes.
