Meridian Hill Park
Interested in a relaxing stroll or sit-down picnic? Visit Meridian Hill Park! It has a European, walled-off quality that sets it apart as a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Meridian Hill Park is located in. It is a 12 acre site situated on an almost perfect north-south axis. Construction of the park began in 1914, but it was not until 1936 that Meridian Hill reached the full status of a formal park. Meridian Hill Park was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994, as "an outstanding accomplishment of early 20th-century Neoclassicist park design in the United States."

Paddle Boating

If you are looking to take a break from touring, you can soak up the sun while paddle boating on the Tidal Basin. You will enjoy breathtaking views of the Jefferson Memorial and the cherry blossoms during peak season. A 2 person passenger boat costs $10/hour while a 4 person passenger boat costs $18/hour. River Cruise on the Potomac

See our nation’s capital from the water by taking a day, sunset or Monuments-by-Moonlight cruise! The cruises run 7 days a week, rain or shine, and board every hour on the half hour. The daylight cruises run from 11:30am-6:30pm, while the sunset/moonlight cruises begin at 7pm, at 8pm on Saturdays only, and at 9pm for June and July only. The cruise lasts around 50 minutes and departs from Washington Harbor in Georgetown. You can purchase tickets online ($14/Adult, $7/Children).

The National Zoo

Eastern Market

Eastern Market offers a variety of delicious fruits, vegetables, flowers, delicatessen, meat, poultry, cheeses, and other delicious local fare. The Eastern Market, which has been a Washington D.C. staple ever since it was founded in 1873, offers visitors a great place to take a break from walking the mall as it is right next to Capitol Hill.

Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a day, you should visit Mount Vernon to see George Washington’s home and estate. Forty five acres of the estate are open to the public and a spectacular view of the Potomac River from the Mansion's piazza will transport you back in time. The gardens provide a beautiful setting for leisurely walks and the house contains important historic artifacts from President Washington’s life. Mount Vernon is 16 miles away from Washington D.C.

President Lincoln’s Cottage

This is where President Lincoln and his family lived for a significant time during his presidency and where he wrote the first draft of the Emancipation Proclamation. There are daily guided tours of the cottage from Monday through Sunday. While you’re there, also visit the museum in the Visitor Education Center next door where you will find exhibitions and galleries that feature life during the Civil War and Lincoln’s presidency.
