Washington D.C. – Ranking Member Eliot Engel, the senior Democratic member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on today’s Committee meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

“Prime Minister Sharif had a frank and cordial conversation with the Committee regarding the state of U.S.-Pakistan relations. While I appreciate the magnitude of the challenges faced by the Prime Minister, and consider Pakistan an important partner of the United States, I also made clear to him that many in Congress remain frustrated by Islamabad’s schizophrenic approach to countering violent extremist groups, including those that continue to attack US troops in Afghanistan. I remain hopeful that we can address these and other issues in a constructive manner and set the relationship between our two countries back on a proper footing.”
