Object Details

This little woodcut by Philip Price appeared in the monthly magazine The Casket a few years after the completion of the Capitol’s west side. Although The Casket vouched for the “correctness of the engraving that we herewith present,” in fact the rendering shows a triangular pediment on the west side of the Capitol, an element that never existed. The print did not originate with The Casket. It was reprinted from an 1820 issue of another journal, Analectic Magazine.
