Washington, DC – Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today issued the following statement on the passing of former prime minister Shinzo Abe:

“I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe. This heinous act of political violence has no place in today’s world, and I condemn it in the strongest terms.

“On this solemn day, we remember and honor Abe for his steadfast leadership of Japan, and for promoting peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world. He was a great friend of the United States, with an unwavering commitment to strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance. Abe’s tireless leadership led to greater coordination among democracies through the Quadrilateral Dialogue and initiatives to create a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive future. Japan is stronger today, and the world a safer place, because of his service.

“Members of the Abe family and the Japanese people are in my thoughts and prayers. I send my heartfelt condolences as the world mourns the untimely death of an outstanding statesman and leader.”
