“I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe. This heinous act of political violence has no place in today’s world, and I condemn it in the strongest terms.
“On this solemn day, we remember and honor Abe for his steadfast leadership of Japan, and for promoting peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world. He was a great friend of the United States, with an unwavering commitment to strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance. Abe’s tireless leadership led to greater coordination among democracies through the Quadrilateral Dialogue and initiatives to create a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive future. Japan is stronger today, and the world a safer place, because of his service.
