WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) joined with twenty-five of his colleagues to urge Carolyn Colvin, the Acting Director of Social Security Administration (SSA), to drop the agency’s plan to deny Second Amendment rights of Americans who receive Social Security and disability benefits and use a representative payee to handle their finances.

According to news reports, the SSA is currently in the planning stages of implementing a new policy to report Social Security recipients who fall into this category to the National Instant Criminal Background (NICS).

“This proposal could strip millions of law-abiding Americans of their constitutional rights. It is yet another misguided overreach on the Obama Administration’s part,” Boozman said.

Under this proposal, Social Security recipients who have representative payees would lose the right to possess any guns they might currently own and would be prohibited from purchasing new firearms.

“Old age or a disability does not make someone a threat to society. Having a representative payee should not be grounds to revoke constitutional rights. We strongly urge you to halt any steps to provide information on Social Security beneficiaries or Supplemental Security Income recipients to the NICS,” the senators wrote in a letter to Colvin.
