Washington, D.C. – Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks and Michael McCaul, Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued a joint statement calling for the release of American citizens unjustly detained by the Burmese military regime:

“It has been two weeks since the arrest of Danny Fenster, an American journalist working to shed light on the reality of life under Burma’s military junta. He was detained as he attempted to fly home to the U.S. to visit his family in Michigan. Danny’s detention is an assault on press freedom, cutting to the core of our democratic values. We call upon Burma’s military regime to immediately and unconditionally release him and other Americans, including Nathan Maung, being unjustly detained, and to allow them to travel freely so that they may return home.”
