Washington, DC Internships

Please note the 2023 Application Deadlines:

  • Spring Semester: Friday, November 25th, 2022

This internship is an excellent opportunity for those interested in public service and learning more about the legislative process. Interns will have the opportunity to be hands-on in the legislative process by assisting with Rep. Torres’ responsibilities on the Rules and Appropriations Committees. Intern responsibilities include:

  • researching legislation
  • attending hearings and briefings
  • drafting constituent letters
  • assisting the press and legislative teams push policy forward
  • drafting memoranda for the staff
  • administrative work as needed

Our office seeks to help you grow beyond the typical intern responsibilities by incorporating your passions and goals into your internship. Additionally, specific press internships are also available to work directly with the Press Secretary to develop and implement communications and social media strategies.

The Paid Fellowship Program is full-time from 9AM to 6PM when Congress is in session and 9AM to 5 PM during recess. Payment is distributed as a monthly stipend at the end of each month. Please note, unless an applicant is financially sponsored by an outside organization, House rules state that all paid House of Representatives employees must be United States citizens. The Unpaid Internship Program is a minimum of 10-12 hours per week. We are flexible with students’ hectic course schedules and can accommodate accordingly.

District
 

Paid Internship:
Scholarship available only to CA-35 residents. Includes a stipend of $2,000 per six weeks.

  • Opportunity available only to CA-35 residents who are college juniors and seniors
  • Program is full-time (Mon-Fri) and runs for (2) six-week session in the summer
  • Responsibilities include assisting with various constituent casework, working on District-based projects and events, answering phones, and assisting with media clips
  • Additional opportunities include working closely with prioritizing district legislative areas of interest with staff, and the Office administrative department to build specific professional skills

Unpaid Internship:

  • Internships run year-round, and hours vary, but a minimum of 10-12 hours per week is recommended 
  • Responsibilities include researching legislation, attending hearings and briefings, answering phones, and giving Capitol tours 
  • Specific press internships are also available and include working directly with the Press Secretary to develop and implement communications and social media strategies

Qualifications

These internships are generally open to all students currently enrolled in a community college or a four-year academic institution, recent graduates, graduate students may also apply.

Candidates must be detail-oriented and self-motivated. Bilingual speakers and residents of the 35th District are encouraged to apply to unpaid internships.
