Sherman Announces nearly $20 Million in Funding for Valley Projects Advanced by Key Congressional Panel

Washington, D.C. -- Congressman Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) announced today his requests of nearly $20 million in federal funds for projects that will address crucial needs across the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles have been advanced by a key Congressional panel. Last year, Congressman Sherman secured nearly $9 million in federal funding for numerous valley projects and priorities.
“These funds will address community needs across the Valley, including improvements to our public parks, funds for at risk youth, additional resources to address homelessness, and additional support to aid in our recovery from the COVID pandemic,” said Congressman Sherman. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to finalize this important funding for our community.”
“Representative Sherman has always been the tip of the spear when it comes to fighting for federal funding that invests in our communities directly,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti earlier this year. “Thanks to his tireless advocacy, the City will be able to make much needed improvements … enhancing the quality of people’s lives, promoting healthier futures, and creating new opportunities for our residents.”
Below is a list of the requests made by Congressman Sherman:
Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission
Committee Approved Amount: $2,000,000
The funding would be used to support Hope of the Valley’s efforts to provide mental health services for the homeless.
Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley
Committee Approved Amount: $450,000
The funding would be used to support the Boys & Girls Club’s after school programs for students in the Valley.
California State University, Northridge
Committee Approved Amount: $1,000,000
The funding would be used for upgrades to the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication at Cal State Northridge.
City of Los Angeles Accessory Dwelling Units Accelerator Program
Committee Approved Amount: $750,000
The funding would pair low-income seniors with homeowners that are willing to rent their ADUs for a minimum period of five years.
City of Los Angeles Park Ballfield Improvements
Committee Approved Amount: $4,000,000
The funding would be used for improvements to the ballfields at four public parks operated by the city of Los Angeles and located across the San Fernando Valley.
Connecting Canoga Park – City of Los Angeles
Committee Approved Amount: $1,500,000
The funding would be used to “Connect Canoga Park” by bridging the digital divide, reduce access barriers and increase reliable and affordable internet access.
El Proyecto Del Barrio
Committee Approved Amount: $1,000,000
The funding would be used for the Center for a Healthy Community which serves both the Winnetka and Northridge community offering dental services and women's specialty care that is of highest need in our geographical areas.
Encino Community Center
Committee Approved Amount: $1,200,000
The project would be used to renovate a historical building to use as a community cultural center in Encino.
Extended Care Program
Committee Approved Amount: $301,649
The funding would be used for Beit T'Shuvah’s “Stepping Stone” Extended Care Program that provides addiction recovery, mental health care, career training and job placement assistance and other residential treatment support.
Haven Hills Inc.
Committee Approved Amount: $500,000
The funding would be used to provide critical renovations and repairs to two domestic violence shelter facilities and a walk-in center.
Labor Community Services of Los Angeles
Committee Approved Amount: $600,000
The funding would be used to expand the successful “Basic Needs” Programs in the San Fernando Valley.
Pierce College
Committee Approved Amount: $2,000,000
The funding would be used for the Biotech Baccalaureate Degree program at Pierce College.
South Valley Transportation & Infrastructure Improvement – City of Los Angeles
Committee Approved Amount: $750,000
The funding would be used to upgrade high impact intersections in the South San Fernando Valley as well as repairs and restorations.
Studio City Recreation Center – City of Los Angeles
Committee Approved Amount: $3,000,000
The project would be used to construct a new gymnasium and community center in Studio City CA.
TreePeople
Committee Approved Amount: $1,149,662
The funding would be used to plant and maintain trees throughout the South and West San Fernando Valley.
