Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement following his return from a Presidential Delegation sent to attend President Jovenel Moïse’s funeral in Haiti:

“Today, during a Presidential Delegation to President Jovenel Moïse’s funeral in Haiti, our delegation had to evacuate after gunfire was heard and tensions escalated. I am thankful that everyone in the delegation is safe and accounted for, and we have returned safely.

“Our delegation went to demonstrate America’s solidarity with the people of Haiti, and our desire to support Haitian political and civil society in their pursuit of security and stable governance. Now is the time for the international community to listen to the voices of the Haitian people and stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they navigate these turbulent times, helping bring about a better future for all of Haiti.”
