Justice in Policing Act

Congresswoman Torres became an original co-sponsor of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, legislation to address systemic racism in law enforcement and protect black and brown communities from discriminatory police practices. Read her full statement here. 

 

Rep. Torres Asks for Stronger Provisions in Police Reform Bill

Congresswoman Torres asked party leaders to include a provision in their police reform bill that would require police departments to continue investigations into officer misconduct even if that officer resigns. The provision is one of a number of proposals Torres announced Tuesday to toughen the sweeping police reform bill unveiled by Democrats last week.

Rep. Torres Offers Amendments to Justice in Policing Act

Congresswoman Torres sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee proposing numerous amendments to the Justice in Policing Act of 2020. 

Among other changes, Congresswoman Torres calls for:

  • The national police misconduct registry to account for officers that resign before a complaint investigation is complete;
  • A requirement that the Department of Justice to review and recommend standards for police officer decertification; and
  • Funding to study and implement effective mental health interventions led by mental health professionals and social workers instead of police officers.

Rep. Torres Signs Resolution to Condemn Police Brutality

Congresswoman Torres endorsed the resolution to condemn police brutality, racial profiling and excessive use of force led by Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Ilhan Omar (MN-05), in partnership with Congresswoman Karen Bass (CA-37), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13).

Rep. Torres Hosts Community Meeting on Protests for Justice and Next Steps

Congresswoman Torres hosted Demand Justice | Deliver Change, a virtual community meeting on George Floyd, the protests for justice, and where we go from here. She joined leaders from across the Inland Empire to hear directly from community members their thoughts on racial justice and the need for policing reform.
