Applying for a New SAMHSA Grant

Main page content

These resources will help you find and apply for funding opportunities.

Important:

All applicants must register with NIH's eRA Commons in order to submit an application. The registration process takes up to six weeks. If your organization is not registered and you do not have an active eRA Commons PI account by the deadline, the application will not be accepted.
No exceptions will be made.

Applicants must also register with the System for Award Management (SAM) and Grants.gov. See Appendix A in the specific SAMHSA Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for all registration requirements. It is strongly recommended that applicants start the registration process six (6) weeks in advance of the application due date.

SAMHSA periodically presents a live training webinar for prospective applicants interested in applying to FY 2022 grant programs. The webinar provides information on how to submit applications to SAMHSA using NIH’s eRA System, including application and registration processes, requirements and validations, and the post-submission process. Check the Grants Dashboard and Grants Training Materials pages for live webinar dates.

Eligibility

Only domestic public and private non-profit entities can apply for SAMHSA grants. Check for any additional eligibility requirements in the specific SAMHSA Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), or on Grants.gov, to see if you are eligible to apply for that grant.

Choose a Funding Opportunity

Search SAMHSA’s NOFOs on the Grants Dashboard or on Grants.gov.

To find a SAMHSA funding opportunity on Grants.gov, enter either the Funding Opportunity Number (SAMHSA’s NOFO number) or the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) number. Both numbers are on the cover page of the NOFO.

Each NOFO includes specific instructions for completing an application.

Information on Electronic Submission

Visit the Submitting Your Application page for information about the three separate registration processes you must complete to submit a grant application to SAMHSA.

Note:

  • SAMHSA requires that applications be submitted electronically through Grants.gov.
  • Successfully submitted applications through Grants.gov will then proceed to the NIH eRA Commons system and validations. Once your submitted application is successfully validated by the NIH eRA Commons system, it will be forwarded to SAMHSA as the receiving institution for further review.
  • SAMHSA will not accept or consider any applications sent by email or fax, or hand-carried without an approved waiver. Please see the “Waiver of Electronic Submission” section on the Submitting Your Application for further details.

Grants.gov Trainings

The Grants.gov video library will help you learn more about registering, searching, and applying for federal grant opportunities.

Please note that Grants.gov is periodically inaccessible due to service maintenance and system enhancements. Please check Grants.gov for the outage calendar.
