The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is pleased to announce the release of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) 2018 Annual Report. This report includes narratives and detailed tables that present estimates from the 2018 NSDUH. The 2018 NSDUH Detailed Tables provide national estimates of substance use and mental health for that year. The 2018 Methodological Summary and Definitions report reviews 2018 NSDUH methods used for generating estimates of substance use and mental health issues. In addition, view the webcast slides (PDF | PPT) and recording presented by Dr. Elinore F. McCance-Katz for findings and insights pertinent to the annual report.

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR): Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors Among Adults Aged ≥18 Years—United States, 2015–2019

During 2015–2019, an estimated annual average of 10.6 million adults in the United States (4.3% of the adult population) reported having had suicidal thoughts in the past year; an estimated 3.1 million adults (1.3% of the adult population) had made a suicide plan in the past year; and an estimated annual average of 1.4 million adults (0.6% of the adult population) reported they made a suicide attempt in the past year.

SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) represents an important source for national data on suicide. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA) provides NSDUH public-use data files for analysis.

Preliminary Findings from Drug-Related Emergency Department Visits, 2021

The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) has released a preliminary report on 2021 drug-related emergency department (ED) visits from participating hospitals across the United States. The report provides national estimates on the top five drugs involved in these types of visits and presents them by demographic and geographic subgroups.

The Office of Evaluation has just released Evaluation of SAMHSA Programs and Policies, May 2022. This Policy and Procedure publication describes an updated, systematic approach to planning, managing and overseeing programmatic and policy evaluation activities within SAMHSA. It incorporates guidance provided by the Foundations for Evidence-based Policymaking Act, 2018 (Evidence Act).

SAMHSA Recognized by Results for America for Progress in Building Evidence and Data to Improve Results

SAMHSA was one of nine federal agencies recognized by Results for America for progress in building and using evidence and data to achieve better results in 2022, in the 2022 Invest in What Works Federal Standard of Excellence. SAMHSA made huge strides compared to the year prior and achieved silver certification for 2022. Dr. Meaghan McHugh, from SAMHSA’s Office of Evaluation in the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, received the award on behalf of SAMHSA at an awards ceremony in Washington D.C. on Nov. 17.

Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN): Findings from Drug-Related Emergency Department Visits, 2021.

An analysis of final 2021 DAWN data presents: (1) nationally representative weighted estimates, including percent and unadjusted rates per 100,000, for all drug-related ED visits, (2) nationally representative weighted estimates for the top five drugs in drug-related ED visits, (3) the assessment of monthly trends and drugs involved in polysubstance ED visits in a subset of sentinel hospitals, and (4) the identification of drugs new to DAWN’s Drug Reference Vocabulary.
