 COVID-19 Wisconsin deaths

Get the official state number of Wisconsin deaths from COVID-19.

This page provides access to annual statistics based on aggregate data from Wisconsin death records.  Wisconsin Stat. ch. 69 authorizes the State Registrar in the Department of Health Services (DHS) to supervise and direct the collection of vital statistics death data. This statute also specifies how local registrars are to collect and file certificates for deaths that occur in their jurisdictions.

The source of data for the annual Wisconsin Deaths report is death certificates filed with DHS. Most of these deaths occurred in Wisconsin, although DHS receives Wisconsin resident death certificates from other states and countries as well. All tables and figures in the report present Wisconsin resident data (deaths of Wisconsin residents). This means that deaths have been assigned to the area where the person lived (usually legal residence), regardless of where the death occurred.

Beginning with deaths that occurred in 1999, causes of death have been coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition. Deaths that occurred before 1999 were coded according to the ICD, Ninth Edition. A comparability table is available below to assist in comparing causes of death across years.
