President Helaine M. Barnett Announces Appointment of Acting Special Counsel to the President

Helaine M. Barnett announced today that Jonathan D. Asher, the longstanding Executive Director of Colorado Legal Services, has agreed to take a three-month unpaid leave of absence from his program to serve as Acting Special Counsel to the President starting October 18, 2004.

President Barnett stated "In my opinion, Jon is one of the most respected legal services attorneys in the country. Jon will be of invaluable assistance to me in performing my job. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to avail myself of his sound judgment, wise counsel and extensive experience."



LSC Board Convenes in Helena, Montana
LSC's FY06 Request Seeks $362.9 Million

The Legal Services Corporation Board of Directors convened Sept. 10-11 in Helena, Mt., and adopted a Fiscal Year 2006 budget request of $362.9 million. Also at the meeting, LSC President Helaine Barnett joined with Montana Chief Justice Karla Gray (pictured), the keynote luncheon speaker, in announcing technology grant awards to Montana Legal Services Association that will fund a “virtual legal assistance” feature for self-represented litigants utilizing the statewide legal services web site

Texas Supreme Court


LSC President Helaine Barnett testified on Sept. 8 at the Texas Supreme Court's second hearing on the "state of legal services for the poor." She updated the Justices on recent developments in Washington, D.C., and in Texas, recognizing the support of Texas Senators John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison for an FY05 funding increase to $352.4 million.

LSC Announces Appointment of Inspector General

The LSC Board of Directors recently appointed Richard “Kirt” West as LSC’s new Inspector General, and West began his work overseeing LSC and its 143 grantees on Sept. 1. West has considerable experience in government oversight. Prior to coming to LSC, he served as Executive Director of the U.S. Postal Service’s Inspector General Management Institute, as well as Assistant Counsel to the Inspector General of both the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Department of Labor.

LSC President Helaine M. Barnett Announces Appointment of LSC Task Force on Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP)

In an effort to determine how best LSC can help its recipients address the difficulties recruiting and retaining staff attorneys that have enormous law school debt, LSC President Helaine M. Barnett has announced the appointment of an LSC Task Force on Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP). A small group of individuals who have extensive experience and knowledge in LRAP have agreed to serve on the Task Force.

LSC Announces 30th Anniversary Celebration

In commemoration of the enactment of the Legal Services Corporation Act in 1974, LSC President Helaine M. Barnett has announced that LSC will hold a major two-day event, November 30 - December 1, in the nation's capital to celebrate the Corporation's 30 years of service to the poor and to discuss the future of legal services.
