Mr. Secretary: Thank you for your generous words of support and for taking the time out of your busy schedule to swear me in today. Fourth Forum of Development Partners for Burundi
Fourth Forum of Development Partners for Burundi On January 13-14, the Fourth Forum of Development Partners for Burundi was held in Brussels. Co-hosted by the United Nations Development Program and the Government of Belgium, the conference was attended by some 30 countries as well as by multilateral, UN and regional associations. The Burundian delegation was headed by President Domitien Ndayizeye.(complete text)


Government of Burundi and Rebel Group Talks
The United States Government warmly welcomes the discussions which took place between President Ndayizeye of Burundi and the representatives of the PALIPEHUTU-FNL Forces of National Liberation in the Netherlands on January 18-21st. We are particularly encouraged by the call in the final Communiqué for an end to violence in Burundi. This marks an important step forward in efforts to bring full peace and stability to Burundi. We call upon the government and PALIPEHUTU-Forces of National Liberation, the only rebel group not to have signed a cease-fire, to continue their discussions with a view toward a complete cessation of hostilities as soon as possible.(complete text)


Press Release on January 8, 2004

Ambassador James H. Yellin called on State Prosecutor Gérard Ngendabanka on January 6 to express solidarity in the wake of the armed attack against Mr. Ngendabanka.

The U.S. Government believes that an attack on the State Prosecutor of Burundi is an attack against the rule of law and urges that the perpetrators be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
