Bush, Kerry Debate Iraq, Economy In Second Meeting

President George Bush and Senator John Kerry fielded questions from undecided voters and vigorously defended their stances on health care, the economy and the war in Iraq as they faced off in the second of three scheduled presidential election debates. The debate, the only one of the three set up in a town hall meeting format, took place at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, October 8. Bush defended his decision to go to war with Iraq, saying, "Saddam Hussein was a threat because he could have given weapons of mass destruction to terrorist enemies. Sanctions were not working. The United Nations was not effective at removing Saddam Hussein." (complete text)

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan will begin shortly, on approximately October 15, 2004. Ramadan will run for about 30 days, one lunar month, and will finish about November 13. The Embassy wishes to remind the American community of the behavior that Qatari citizens and other Muslims will expect visiting and resident non-Muslim foreigners to observe during Ramadan.(complete text)


Presidential Debates Play Important Role in U.S. Elections
President Bush and Senator John Kerry will face off in the first of three presidential debates on September 30 at the University of Miami in Florida, according to the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). The focus of the first debate will be foreign policy and homeland security. The three debates -- the second is scheduled for October 8 at Washington University in Missouri and the third for October 13 at Arizona State University -- will "address those issues that are of importance ....(complete text)


Ambassador Untermeyer presents his credentials
Ambassador Chase Untermeyer presented his credentials to Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmad bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, in Doha on September 12, 2004. The minister on this occasion wished the Ambassador success in his mission here.

Ambassador Chase Untermeyer was sworn in as the new Ambassador to State of Qatar on the 10th of August at a function in the State Department. The Secretary of State, Collin Powell in his remarks at the swearing in ceremony said "Chase Untermeyer's diverse talents make him uniquely qualified to lead our mission in Qatar."(complete text)
