New Dormitory in Kabul to House 1,100 Female Students

 

Facility funded with $9 million U.S. contribution

 

More than 1,100 Afghan women will be able to pursue their studies at various higher education programs in Kabul thanks to a new women's dormitory in the capital, funded with a $9 million contribution from the United States.

U.S., Afghanistan Sign Trade and Investment Framework Agreement

 

Officials from both countries expect a rise in bilateral trade activity

 

The United States and Afghanistan sign a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in Kabul September 21 in what U.S. trade officials characterize as a first step towards closer trade relations between the two countries. "The TIFA is not only indicative of President Karzai's focus on economic reconstruction but of President Bush's unflagging commitment to assist Afghanistan develop economically," according to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick.

Cites public diplomacy efforts to counter negative views

 

The United States is responding to negative perceptions of the U.S. in the Middle East through a variety of public diplomacy initiatives, Secretary of State Colin Powell said. He cited new Arabic radio and television broadcasting as well as expanded exchange programs for Arab journalists and students. Powell said that Iraq and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are often combined in the public mind and constitute a chief reason for negative views of the United States.
