The American Embassy can provide the following services to American Citizens:

Passport Services - Passports, other than limited validity emergency passports, are no longer issued overseas. We issue Consular Reports of Birth for children of American citizens born in Burkina Faso. We can also add additional pages to passports and amend them if necessary.

We accept completed applications, and appropriate fees, for forwarding to the National Passport Office in New Hampshire by courier. Applicants should allow a minimum of one month to renew an expiring passport. Parents of minors aged 14 or younger are required to complete DS 3053

Registration and Warden - We strongly urge all American citizens to register with the Embassy and keep their registration current. Not only will this allow us to contact you in case of an emergency, but it will also simplify providing you with passport services should your passport be lost or stolen. On the other hand, the renewal of a lost or stolen passport, in cases where the bearer has not registered with the Embassy, can take six weeks or longer.

Note on the Privacy Act - The Privacy Act, which is designed to protect the privacy and rights of all Americans, occasionally complicates our efforts to assist U.S. citizens in Burkina Faso. As a general rule, we may not reveal information regarding an individual American's location, welfare, intentions or problems to anyone, including family members and Congressional representatives, without the expressed consent of that individual. We strongly urge all Americans to complete the Privacy Act Waiver on the reverse side of the registration card when they register at the Embassy.

Welfare and Whereabouts of U.S. Citizens - We can assist American citizens who find themselves temporarily destitute by contacting family, friends or business associates to raise private funds and transmit these to Burkina Faso. The Embassy maintains lists of local physicians and attorneys. We can assist Americans who become physically or mentally ill while traveling. Our consular officers can assist American parents in cases of international child abduction and custody disputes. While we cannot get Americans released from jail, when we are informed of the arrest of an American citizen, we will insist on prompt access, provide a list of attorneys, provide information on the local legal system, offer to contact family or friends, visit on a regular basis, protest mistreatment and, if necessary, provide dietary supplements.

If an American dies in Burkina Faso we stand ready to assist the family in whatever way we can.

Consular Information Program - Consular Information Sheets (CIS) on most countries in the world are available from the State Department website at http://travel.state.gov. The CIS contains information on entry requirements, crime and security conditions, areas of instability and other details relevant to travel in a particular country.

Special Citizen Services/Federal Benefits - The American Citizen Services unit can provide Social Security number applications, IRS tax forms and instruction booklets, voter registration, selective service registration and notarial services. There is no charge for applying for a social security number or requesting voter or tax information.
