Mike Spangler arrived in Peshawar, Pakistan on August 13, 2004 to assume the position of Principal Officer at the American Consulate.

Mr. Spangler was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 17, 1951 and educated at the University of Edinburgh (M.A.) and the University of Wisconsin (M.S. and Ph.D. in cultural anthropology).  He was commissioned as a Foreign Service Officer in September 1984 and has served in Oman, Serbia, China, and Romania.  More recently, he has served in Washington in the East Asian and Pacific Bureau of the State Department.  Over the past year, Mr. Spangler attended the U.S. Marine Corps War College and was awarded a Master's degree in military strategic studies in June 2004. 

Mr. Spangler is married to Ms. Jae O. Chung and has two daughters, Catherine and Jessica.  He speaks Arabic, Chinese, and Serbian and is currently studying Pashtu.
