COMMERCIAL/ECONOMIC SERVICES

The Commercial/Economic Section is responsible for monitoring and managing the full range of economic relations between the U.S. and Macedonia. The section interacts with the Macedonian government on bilateral and international economic policy issues; reports on developments in the Macedonian economy; facilitates U.S. exports to, and investment in, Macedonia.

Action Plan for Economic & Commercial Initiatives

We will use the opportunities presented by the series of upcoming key events to raise the visibility of Macedonia before U.S. investors, traders and business leaders, focusing especially on the Macedonian-American business community and those U.S. enterprise already engaged in the region. Not excluding those two groups , we will seek to identify and engage sophisticated, medium-sized U.S. companies who are looking for strategic positioning in a low-cost European environment. For these companies who are looking, we will identify and communicate the comparative advantages offered by Macedonia, with the primary goal of attracting U.S. investment to this market. We will work with local businessmen to develop lists of opportunities in promising areas and sectors, beginning with a focus on energy, tourism, apparel Construction, transportation and communications. We will succeed when we have attracted a "critical mass" of investment that is self-sustaining.

In order to help Macedonia build an environment that will attract investment, we will work with USAID, International Financial Institutions, EU/PHARE, and other organizations focusing on economic, commercial and legal reforms. Identifying key areas of mutual concern and joining efforts to bring progress. We will encourage high level visitors to stress these key areas of common concerns, consistently highlighting the need for specific reforms. Initial assessments of where focus needs to be directed are the banking sector, accession to WTO, fair and open business practices to include international standards In tendering and accounting , and anti corruption measures.
