AMERICAN CITIZEN SERVICES

The Consular Section handles American Citizen Services by appointment only Monday through Friday. Consular officers and local staff assist Americans and their families in serious emergencies such as the arrest or death of Americans overseas. They also adjudicate applications for U.S. passports, assist with some social security matters, issue reports of birth and death for Americans abroad, facilitate absentee voting, and provide some notarial services. Telephone inquiries are accepted between 8AM and 4:30 PM at 5685170-79.

Deaths and Arrests of Americans Abroad

If you learn of the death or arrest of an American in Pakistan, please contact a consular officer immediately.

Registration

It is important for Americans residing or traveling in Pakistan to register with the consulate. Registration information is protected by the Privacy Act and is not shared with any other U.S. government agency. Registration enables the Consulate to help Americans during emergencies such as evacuations, and in the event a U.S. passport is lost and needs to be replaced.

Passports

Applications for new and replacement U.S. passports are accepted in the Consulate by appointment only. Lost passport applications must be accompanied by a police report with English translation. To allow for processing time, please visit the consular section well in advance of travel plans.

To apply for a passport, you need the following:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (a previous passport, birth certificate, naturalization certificate, registration with the Embassy, etc.)

  • Two 2" by 2" (5 cm by 5cm) color or black and white photos. Polaroid photographs cannot be accepted.

  • Completed application form.

  • Application fee.

NOTE: As of July 2, 2001, BOTH parents must sign passport applications for children under 14, and both parents must have sufficient ID and the child's birth certificate. If one parent cannot be present, they must send a letter saying they do not object to the issuance of a passport to the child. If a parent is deceased, the remaining parent must bring the original death certificate. If the parents are divorced, the applying parent must bring the divorce decree. If one parent has sole custody, they must bring the court order granting custody.
