US Ambassador to Gabon/Sao Tome and Principe

Kenneth P. Moorefield

Ambassador Kenneth Moorefield was born on July 10, 1943 in Temple, Texas. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and after attended graduate school at Georgetown University. In over thirty years of public service, Mr. Moorefield has served in the military, civil and foreign services. Mr. Moorefield is one of only two Career Ministers in the Commercial Service and has had a broad-based Foreign Service career in Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Mr. Moorefield is a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, where he had two tours as an army infantry officer. Subsequently, as National Director of the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program with the Action Agency, he helped organize an initiative to reintegrate war veterans back into American society.

During his overseas career with the Departments of Commerce and State, Mr. Moorefield held political, economic and commercial officer positions at our Embassies overseas, including Special Assistant to our Ambassador to Vietnam; Political Officer in Nha Trang and Director of Consular Evacuation in Saigon; Deputy Director of the Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, Refugee Camp for Indochinese Refugees; Special Assistant to the Sinai Support Mission Director in the State Department; and Science and Technology Attaché in Caracas. In his Commercial Service career, Kenneth Moorefield served as Commercial Attaché in Lima, Commercial Counselor in Caracas, and Commercial Minister Counselor at the US Mission to the European Union in Brussels. Mr. Moorefield most recently served as Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the US Mission in Paris, France. Mr. Moorefield was a Member of the Department of State's Senior Seminar in 1994.

Mr. Moorefield has received various military decorations including the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Stars, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Honor Medal. During his career with the Department of Commerce, he received the Presidential Meritorious Honor Awards for his accomplishments as the Commercial Counselor in Hanoi and Minister Counselor in London, and the State Department Superior Honor Award for heroism during the evacuation from Saigon. Mr. Moorefield speaks fluent Spanish, French and basic Vietnamese.
