Menopause brings many changes. It's a time when a woman's risk of heart disease starts to rise. The risk of other health problems such as osteoporosis and breast cancer also increases. Until recently, taking hormone therapy with estrogen alone or with estrogen plus progestin was thought to help protect women against heart disease. But a study from the Women's Health Initiative showed that taking estrogen plus progestin poses more risks than benefits.
These Web pages provide more information about the findings and the use of hormone therapy during and after menopause, as well as alternative approaches to treat menopausal symptoms and other conditions.
