Waste Transportation

The transportation of radioactive materials and wastes is highly visible and frequently controversial among many segments of the public.  As DOE expands its site cleanup and closure activities, the availability of safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation becomes critical.

Transportation, however, is a DOE-wide function serving many programs. The  Office of Integration and Disposition's transportation responsibilities extend beyond the Office of Environmental Management to support this DOE-wide function through three key initiatives. We provide policy, budget, and program direction to the National Transportation Program.

We also are responsible for development and implementation of the Transportation Emergency Preparedness Program. Lastly, we support an important Departmental non-proliferation mission through our policy oversight of the Foreign Research Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel Acceptance Program.
