Operations Research Analysts
As an Operations Research Analyst you will integrate IRS procedural and
systems knowledge with theoretical operations methodologies to improve
managerial and tax administration tools. You will:
Apply economic, mathematical, and statistical analysis
Perform a variety of studies focused on IRS operations,
related taxpayer behavior, and projected impact upon overall burden,
compliance, and service.
Specific course requirements:
A bachelor's degree in Operations Research or a similar degree that includes
at least 24 semester hours of math and statistics.
Economists
As an economist you will plan, develop, and monitor studies by using tax
and information return data in conjunction with demographic and economic
data. You will:
Make projections, forecast data, and create computer-based
models
Write and review complex research planning and implementation
documents.
Resolve complex data anomalies to ensure acceptable
levels of data quality
Prepare research reports
Analyze and examine data using statistical software.
Specific course requirements:
21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in accounting, statistics
or calculus.
Mathematical Statisticians and
Statisticians
As a Statistician, you will design, plan, and implement data samples,
research sampling and non-sampling error and review outliers. Statisticians
also develop weighting and estimation programs. Research professionals:
Work with internal and external customers to design
research projects.
Author reports
Recommend and apply data analysis, tools and statistical
software.
Develop research measures.
Evaluate research project proposals.
Specific course requirements:
Mathematical Statistician - 24 semester hours in math and statistics of
which at least 12 hours must be in math and 6 hours in statistics
Statistician - 15 hours in math and statistics of which at least 6 hours
must be in math
Computer Research Analysts
As a Computer Research Analysts, you will serve as an application specialist
in the use of analytical and quantitative software. You will play a critical
role in guiding colleagues concerning the optimal design and use of current
technology in data acquisition, data base design, and data disposition.
You will:
Work as research project consultant in developing
unique computer-based models.
Serve as classroom instructor and on the job coach
during initial training and implementation stages of new research technology.
Review research analysis and reports.
Specific course requirements:
Majors in computer science, information science, information systems management,
mathematics, statistics, operations research, and engineering are highly
desirable. However, course work and/or job experience in development and
/or application of computer programs and systems are accepted.
Policy Analysts
As a Policy Analyst, you will plan and coordinate research initiatives
to review and revise tax administration practices, programs and policies.
Tasks include:
Work with project teams to revise tax administration
policy.
Identify and communicate existing trends.
Author and present research reports
Specific course requirements
Majors in accounting, business, marketing, psychology, public administration,
and social sciences are highly desirable or relevant course work and/or
appropriate job experience.
Program Analysts
As a Program Analyst, you will serve as an IRS specialist in operational
areas and tax law. You work with internal and external customers to research
project objectives. Task include:
Negotiate research project objectives.
Gather tax return data and information for projects.
Edit research reports
Specific course requirements
Majors in accounting, business, marketing, psychology, public administration,
and social sciences are highly desirable or relevant course work and/or
appropriate job experience.
Program Evaluation and Risk
Analysts
As a Program Evaluation and Risk Analyst, you will work on teams to assess
programs that contribute to the IRS strategic mission. You will also provide
IRS senior executives with policy recommendations.
The position requires graduate level or equivalent work
experience and starts at the GS-9 level.
Specific course requirements:
Majors in accounting, business, marketing, psychology, public administration,
and social sciences are highly desirable or relevant course work and/or
appropriate job experience.
Artificial Intelligence Specialists
As an Artificial Intelligence Specialist, you will apply artificial intelligence
techniques and other advanced computing skills to solve IRS business problems
using neural networks, data mining, encryption, agent-based modeling,
expert systems, text generation, and natural language, and sophisticated
web applications.
Specific course requirements
Majors in computer science, information systems, systems management, mathematics
or operations research with knowledge of the principles and techniques
of artificial intelligence.
