OSHA Aligns with the Gilbane Building Company
Alliance will focus on preventing exposure to fall hazards

WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Gilbane Building Company joined forces today to further the safety and health of workers throughout the construction industry.

OSHA and Gilbane signed an Alliance that will provide industry workers and employers with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help protect workers' safety and health, particularly in the area of fall protection.

"Every year, falls account for the greatest number of workplace loss of life in the construction industry," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "We believe combining our efforts with that of the Gilbane Building Company will prove successful in helping employers and workers to address fall protection which will reduce fall hazards throughout the industry."

Added Thomas F. Gilbane, Jr., Chairman and CEO of the Gilbane Building Company: "At Gilbane, safety is a core value. It's simply the right thing to do to protect all the workers on all projects. We know that OSHA shares our commitment to accident prevention and safe practices. It's an honor to formalize our long relationship."

The Alliance gives OSHA and Gilbane the opportunity to develop safety and health curricula on fall prevention and to provide expertise in communicating that information to workers and employers throughout the construction industry. Additionally, Gilbane will conduct two 30-hour construction safety courses to its employees during each year of the Alliance, and will offer those courses to others in the construction industry and to OSHA staff.

OSHA and Gilbane will work together to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards and in communicating information to industry workers and employers. Both organizations will participate together in forums, roundtable discussions and stakeholder meetings to discuss workplace hazards in the industry. Additionally, OSHA and Gilbane will work with other Alliance participants on construction industry issues and projects that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.

Finally, information sharing will be used among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding Gilbane's best practices or effective approaches.

Gilbane Building Company, founded in 1873 in Providence, RI as a carpentry and general contracting shop, provides construction and consulting services to government agencies, private companies and the public transportation, health care and education industries.

OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health. For more information, visit
