General Competitions
The ATP leverages industry
R&D; dollars in making investments in high-risk, enabling technologies that
promise broad-based economic benefits in the future. The ATP carries out
competitions each year to select R&D; projects for support. Competitions
are announced in Commerce Business Daily, by direct mail, and posted on
our world wide web page. Only project proposals submitted in response to
a formal competition are considered for evaluation. Projects are selected
on the basis of both technical and business merit through a fair and rigorous
selection process.
General competitions are open to all technology
areas. Past general competition awards have covered a broad spectrum of
technologies in agriculture, biotechnology,
microelectronics and electronics
manufacturing, machine tools,
advanced automotive manufacturing, advanced
materials, information and communication technology,
chemical processing, and other areas.
Open Competitions
To simplify the application procedure and
encourage the broadest possible participation by industry, starting with
the 1999 competion, ATP:
- conducted a single large open competition
rather than several competitions in different technology areas;
- established several independent technology-specific
selection boards; and
- assigned each project proposal for review
by the board most qualified to evaluate the proposal’s merits.
ATP Introduces Process Improvements to
Streamline 2001 Competition for Innovative Industrial R&D;. A new,
streamlined proposal submission and review procedure marks the 2001 Advanced
Technology Program (ATP) competition announced January 2, 2001.
