Seeds of Peace dedicates itself to teaching teenagers from conflict areas around the world the skills of conflict resolution and peacemaking. It recruits 14-15 year olds from the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and Southeast Europe to attend three-week camp sessions in Maine, where they interact with peers on the opposite sides of their conflicts, learn to communicate with them, and even form lasting friendships.
The organization is a non-profit, non-political group funded through private donations from the corporate sector and private individuals. In 2002, the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development awarded over $700,000 to fund specific coexistence projects.
This website presents the Washington File’s reporting from the Seeds of Peace campsite in Maine and coverage of occasions where alumni have met with U.S. officials or attended conferences in the United States. Information for these articles were gathered from telephone interviews with the staff and participants of Seeds of Peace.
