Dudley Knox Library's Map Collection is located on the first floor. The collection supports and enhances the research and scholarship of the School curriculums by providing visual and geographic coordination of data. This collection contains selected single sheet and portfolio maps available from federal depository, military (National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), formerly Defense Mapping Agency (DMA)), and commercial sources. Although consisting of mostly current material, some older resources are retained for historical research, focusing primarily on military history and NSA studies.

Material is acquired in support of the curriculum and degree programs of the school. Emphasis is placed on acquiring international materials and resources in significant military arenas. Our maps do circulate to on-campus users. We can also order maps for our patrons, but this does take time so please start early.

Color Landform Atlas of the United States: Divided by state, each entry includes a topographic map, a counties map, a satellite image, and an 1895 state map, in addition to many external links. Created by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
Digital Atlas Of California: Geographically displays statistics of population
Historic Topographic Maps of California: Topographic quadrangle maps for the San Francisco Bay Area dating from 1895 to the present. They are available in 7.5- and 15-minute quadrangles.
Massachusetts Electronic Atlas: The user can choose a geographic area, select data layers to appear on the maps, turn layers on and off, zoom in, zoom out or pan, and download the maps and associated numeric datasets. There are many choices for the data layers from major roads to residential tax rates.

BarentsWatch Atlas: UNEP/GRID Arendal project covering threats on environment, forest and protected areas, fauna, physical geography, and population and urban areas.
USGS Online Map Lists: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been producing maps of the United States for more than a century. Among the best known of the many products of the USGS are topographic maps, which show land contours associated with hills, valleys, slopes, ridges, mountains, and other natural land features. Most USGS topographic maps also show various other kinds of information, including rivers and streams, roads and railroads, swamps and forests, and cities and towns. Many of these maps also show buildings and other manmade structures.

CIA World Factbook Reference Maps
South American Map Links: This list compiled by a division of the United Nations University contains links to more South American map related sites.
R-Hydronet: A regional hydrometeorological databank to support water resource assessment in South America. It uses joint pan-American scientific and monitoring station information resources.
Britannica World Atlas--South: Illustrates the physiography of southern South America. This map includes elevations, international and political subdivision boundaries.
World Atlas: South America (MapQuest): This site includes a small collection of historical maps and links to individual South American country maps.
Digital Chart of the World--Central/South America & the Caribbean(Penn State University Libraries): This website will allow the user to download the selected boundaries and layers of different countries in South America in Arc/INFO export format from ESRI's Digital Chart of the World data ser. Users can view layers as GIF files or download GIS data in Arc/INFO and ARCVIEW formats.

CIA Maps of Europe: This collection from the Perry-Castenada Library at the University of Texas includes mostly political and shaded relief maps presented in jpeg files and are available by country or region.

Satellite Images: Recent satellite images presented by the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) include the weather in Europe, land and water surface temperature, vegetation, ozone concentration, electron density and chlorophyll density.

CIA Australian Maps: From the Perry-Castenada library at the University of Texas, this large collection of Central Intelligence Agency maps includes political maps, aeronautical, shaded relief, and nautical charts.
Australian Geological Survey: This interactive mapping system allows users to select a particular area or create maps of the whole continent of Australia. Users can zoom in/out, add roads, towns, mineral deposits, etc. This site also includes links to satellite images, the standard AGS map series, earthquake maps and more.
Australian Geodynamics Cooperative Research Center: Users can create maps by selecting various layers to produce areas covering the geology and geophysics of the Australian continent.

Antarctic Digital Database (ADD): ADD is a source of vector topographic data for Antarctica provided by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). Data sets are available for download in ARC/INFO uncompressed export format, compressed and encrypted for download using zip. Registration is required, but free
NASA High Resolution Map Images: This first high resolution radar map of Antarctica was produced as part of NASA's Antarctic Mapping Project.
USGS Atlas of Antarctic Research: Work on the Atlas of Antarctic Research began in December 1998. The Antarctic Atlas has been developed using software from the National Atlas of the United States. It has been designed to promote greater geographic awareness of the continent and the digital glossarial data that describe it.

Aeronautical Charts

What they are:
Aeronautical charts provide many ground features in addition to air navigation information. Most of our aeronautical products are produced by NIMA. The following is a list of some of the available products:

Global Navigation and Planning Chart(GNC):: Worldwide small-scale aeronautical chart series. These are suitable for flight planning, operation over long distances, and enrooted navigation in long range, high altitude, high speed aircraft. Principal cities, towns, drainage, primary roads and railroads, prominent culture, shaded relief, and spot elevations are shown. Aeronautical data includes NAVIES, airports and restricted areas. The scale is 1:5,000,000.
Jet Navigation Chart(JNC):: The Jet Navigation Charts are long range navigation graphics specifically designed to meet the requirements of users in high altitude (25,000 to 50,000) feet above ground level, high speed aircraft. Each chart combines extensive area coverage with depiction of detail for navigation by radar, celestial, dead-reckoning and pilot age. The scale is 1:2,000,000 and 1:3,000,000.
Operational Navigation Chart(ONC):: The ONC is the standard worldwide overprint depicting obstructions, aerodomes, special use airspace, navigational aids, Maximum Elevation figures (MEFs), and related data. The scale is 1:1,000,000.
Tactical Pilotage Chart(TPC):: The TPC is the standard worldwide medium-scale aeronautical chart series. These and other aeronautical navigation and planning charts provide essential cartographic data appropriate to scale, and are overprints with stable aeronautical information such as obstructions, aerodomes, special use airspace, and navigational aids. Maximum Elevation Figures (MEF's) and related data.
Joint Operations Graphic-Air(JOG-A):: The JOG-A is a standard Series 1501 modified for aeronautical use. Series 1501 charts are the standard DoD medium scale cartographic products and are produced from a common base. JOGs are geographically integrated charts, generally patterned on three-by-four-by-four sections of the International Map of the World (IMW) index systems. The number of JOG sheets within an IMV area varies with latitude. Designed to meet air use requirements.
Evasion Chart (EVC):: Composed of 8 to 10 Series 1501 charts printed on both sides of waterproof tear-resistant material. JOG-G is preferred source; JOG-A or native source charts are used where JOG-Gs are not available. Border and open water areas contain supplemental survival information such as plant identification. White minimization and camouflage masking are applied. Folds for storage in flight suit or survival vest.
Anti-Submarine Warfare Planning Chart(ASWPC):: A plotting sheet depicting a combination of aeronautical, hydrographic, and surface/subsurface range information for selected coastal areas. The Scale is 1:1,166,612.

How to find:
These charts are indexed in the NIMA Aeronautical Catalog (kept in the Info Services Office).

Physical Access:
Unclassified Aeronautical charts are located in Map Ref on the shelves outside the Map Office. All Limited Distribution and Classified Charts are kept in RRS.

What they are:
ARC Digitized Raster Graphics (ADRG) are digital raster representations of paper graphic products. Maps are converted into digital data by raster scanning and transforms the data into the Equal Arc - Second Raster Map (ARC) system frame of reference. Most of our digital data products are produced by NIMA. USGS also produces digital datasets, such as their Digital elevation models (DEMs).

How to find:
Digital data is indexed in the NIMA Digital Products Catalog. This catalog is Limited Distribution and is kept in the Information Services Office.

How to use:
Digital data requires viewing assistance and often manipulation to achieve the desired results. NIMAUSE (NIMA Utility Software Environment) Version 2.1. is a self-contained set of computer programs and computer utilities designed to work with NIMA data and information. Also available is ESRI's ArcExplorer, which is a lightweight GIS data explorer that can be downloaded in exchange for registering.

Data Hound: An ESRI service that catalogs and searches web sites that offer freely downloadable data compatible with ESRI software.
Digital Chart of the World: From Penn State University Library, this web site allows users to download the boundaries and layers of different countries, in Arc/INFO export format, from ESRI's Digital Chart of the World data set.
DTED Level 0: The National Imagery and Mapping Agency has made available on the Internet this standard digital dataset (Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED�) Level 0) which may be of value for scientific and technical purposes.
ESRI's GIS Jump Station: GIS sites organized by country and then categorized by Government Sites (Federal, and State and Local), University and Educational Sites, Noncommercial Sites and ESRI Users, Commercial Sites, and Miscellaneous.
GISLinx: This comprehensive site has been compiled to provide GIS users with a quick and easy source of information on a variety of issues. This site contains over 1,700 links.
Geospatial Data Clearinghouse: This data collection can be searched based on their metadata or description.
The GIS Notebook: Bill Thoen has created these "summaries of short trips into the web researching various subjects related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)".
Global 30 Arc Second Elevation Data Set (GTOPO30): GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). FTP download of tiles is free.
Online Resources for Earth Scientists: Geography & GIS Data Sets and Software- Datasets are arranged by city data, digital maps & images, mapping tools, US data, world-wide data, and miscellaneous.
Starting the Hunt: Guide to mostly on-line and mostly free U.S. Geospatial and Attribute Data.
Terraserver.com: TerraServer.com is the online source for overhead imagery. They have the largest online atlas of high-resolution satellite imagery and aerial photography. Imagery of "Area 51" is now available on Terraserver.
"The Ultimate GIS Directory": A quick and organized way to find information regarding GIS mapping.
UNEP/GRID: The Global Resource Information Database of the United Nations Environment Programme: African, Asian, and Global population data sets as well as topographic, climatic, soil, and vegetation data.

Nautical Charts

What they are:

Physical Nautical Charts:: NIMA's hydrographic publications are designed for nautical navigation. The nautical charts provide coastline depictions, soundings, and select ports. We also receive several hydrographic navigational publications from NIMA.
Digital Nautical Charts:: NIMA Digital Nautical Charts are available at Dudley Knox (Limited Distribution) and can be used after downloading the appropriate software. Full Utility Navigation Demonstration (FUND) is NIMA utility software designed to promote and demonstrate the content and functionality of DNC� in its natural Vector Product Format (VPF)

How to find:
Charts are geographically indexed in the DMA Nautical Charts and Publications Catalog (MapRef GA359 U541), and in the NIMA Hydrographic Products Catalog (kept in the Information Services Office).

Physical Access:
Unclassified Nautical Charts are located in the large map cases in the Maps area. They are filed in numeric order and the encompassing numbers are designated on the drawer label. Smaller intercoastal charts are also filed in numeric order, and are located in the filing cabinet in the Maps area in a drawer labeled Nautical Charts. Digital Nautical Charts can be found in the Map Office Rm 152. (Please ask a reference librarian for assistance).

Road Maps

Internet Resources

What they are:
Road maps are tools for determining a route of travel.

How to find:
Road maps in our collection are not entered in BOSUN or WEBCAT.

Physical Access:
Road maps are located in the filing cabinet in the Maps area in a drawer labeled Road Maps.

Collection Evaluation:
Currently we have several road maps of U.S. military installations and their surrounding communities. We also have some road maps of foreign destinations.

Internet Resources for Road Maps

Lycos Road Maps: Users can create custom maps for any destination. This site includes yellow pages, people finder, and international maps.

EuroShell.com: This site offers driving directions, distance, and estimated driving times and between European cities.
MapQuest: Gives detailed driving instructions from either an address or a airport or tourist location. Also will draw maps of U.S. and International cities and locations.
UK Street Map: This site provides searching of street maps of Greater London and road atlas maps for the whole of mainland Britain. You can search by London Street, Post Code, UK Place, OS Grid (enter as x,y), or Landranger Grid.

Topographic Charts

Internet Resources

What they are:
Topographic maps are generally of a large scale, showing detailed surface features. These features generally include relief, in the form of contours; natural features, such as forests, rivers, and lakes, and manmade items; such as roads, railways, and canals. We receive USGS topographic maps and NIMA topographic products. Some of the NIMA products available are; TLM's 1:100,000, TLM's 1:50,000, TLM's 1:25,000, City Graphics, and Military Installations.

How to find:
USGS topographic maps can be located using geographic indexes of each state. NIMA products are indexed in the Topographic Products Catalog. This catalog is Limited Distribution and kept in the Information Services Office.

Physical Access:
Topographic maps are kept in the large map cases. USGS topos are separated by state and filed in alphabetical order by quadrangle name. Unclassified NIMA topographic maps are also kept in the map cases. Limited Distribution and Classified topo maps are kept in RRS.

Collection Evaluation:
We have USGS topographic quads of Washington, Puerto Rico, California, Oregon, and Alaska. Our strongest concentration is of California maps. We also have NIMA topographic maps of U.S. military installations, and some Limited Distribution foreign areas available.

Internet Resources for Topographic Maps

Historic Topographic Maps of California: Topographic quadrangle maps for the San Francisco Bay Area dating from 1895 to the present. They are available in 7.5- and 15-minute quadrangles.
MapFinder: USGS index site that allows searching of their 7.5 minute printed paper maps by either entering the name of a populated place, entering a Zip Code, or clicking on a map.
Topofinder: A service provided by MapQuest. This page allows for city and state searching to determine the USGS Topo Quad that you are interested in.
Topozone: Using USGS maps, this site offers interactive topographic maps of the entire United States.

MapQuest Map Store: Allows you to search by keyword or to browse through different geographic regions. It also displays a digital image of most of the maps. Great for searching for USGS topo maps.

Atlapedia Online: Atlapedia Online contains full color physical and political maps as well as key facts and statistics
on countries of the world.
Alexandria Digital Library (ADL): This is Project Alexandria's Other-Sites Index. Organized like a directory tree, beginning with the Universe, the sites are classified by location then by theme or type. The entire index can be browsed by subject or by title.
CIA Factbook: Reference Maps: Sixteen regional maps
Historical Maps: The David Rumsey Collection focuses on 18th and 19th century North and South American cartographic materials. The collection includes atlases, globes, school geographies, maritime charts, and a variety of separate maps including pocket, wall, and manuscript maps.
Infomine: UC Riverside Project that indexes map related web sites and provides abstracts. These are organized by Table of Contents/Subject/Keyword/Title and are searchable.
United Nations Cartographic Section: A large list of online maps including peacekeeping maps, thematic maps and general maps.
UTexas: Map Related Web Sites: Alphabetical list of maps grouped by city, state, country, general, weather, and historical
Utrecht University, The Netherlands: Odden'sBookmarks: The Fascinating World of Maps and Mapping: Comprehensive international coverage. There is a well organized table of contents but the site is very large and can be confusing at times.
War Maps: From the USMA History Department at West Point, this collection includes maps and atlases pertaining to several wars and conflicts world wide.

Finding maps

GeoIndex: Specific search engine covering geotechnical, environmental, hydrogeology, geology, mining, and petroleum topics. Lists of companies, associations, education, and government can also be browsed.
Infomine: This UC Riverside Project indexes and abstracts map related web sites. Searching can be done by Subject/Keyword/Title/Author or you can browse through the Table of Contents/Subject/Keyword/Title lists.
Search ways for maps on the Internet: ETH Library Zurich has provided a list of resources categorized by: special searches for maps on Internet; general search machines; special search fields; and OPACS of libraries and institutions.
Stanford: Searching for Maps: Gives ideas on searching for maps in Socrates, Stanford's online catalog. Many of these tips can carry over into other databases.
