For Center Directors
Center Directors' Updates
The Center Directors' Update is a publication by the NCI Center for Bioinformatics intended to disseminate information to the caBIG Cancer Center Director community. It has been created as an avenue for Center Directors to receive updates on key issues related to the caBIG initiative.

caBIG Compatibility Guidelines
NCICB and the caBIG Project Team have developed preliminary guidelines outlining the requirements for caBIG compatibility. Future versions of the guidelines will be a collective effort by the caBIG community and will represent the needs and aspirations for the program. To review the caBIG Compatibility Guidelines Document, please click here.
Inventory of Tools
The current inventory of tools, infrastructure and datasets used to support the caBIG initiative can be accessed via the Inventory section of this website.
Some of the most requested links from the Inventory are below.
C3D | C3D is a caBIG-compatible remote data capture solution, implemented using standardized vocabularies and common data elements. It is available as both a web-accessible application service provider (ASP) solution hosted at the NCICB, or as a system entirely deployed at participating Cancer Centers. |
|
caBIG Protocols | The caBIG Clinical Protocols Portal is a web based application that allows researchers to share their clinical trial protocols among members of the caBIG community. In addition, the system collects data related to the trial including Primary Sites, Participating Sites, Endpoints, Start/End Dates, Accruals, Type, Phase, Organ site, Study medications, and Regimen. Users can then retrieve information about specific trials by searching the system for clinical trials based on various criteria including title and description keywords, phase, and performance site. Submitters may elect to allow other researchers to download their Protocol Document, or may choose to keep it private. Submitters and Administrators also have the ability to update and edit the information about the trial, including the accruals, as needed. Accounts have already been created for Center Directors, so the portal can be used immediately. To obtain your username and password, you or your representative may contact NCICB Applications Support at NCICB@pop.nci.nih.gov or by phone 888-478-4423 or 301-451-4384. Additional accounts for your Cancer Center staff can be created upon request through NCICB Applications Support. |

caDSR | NCICB supports a broad initiative to standardize the way identical kinds of data are collected across different cancer research studies. The effort is known as the Common Data Elements (CDE) project, and has been growing for several years. CDEs are developed by various NCI-sponsored organizations, then centrally stored and managed at NCICB in the Cancer Data Standards Repository (caDSR). The caDSR has convenient web-based tools for browsing and editing CDEs, and a programming interface for software developers to use. Information and access to caDSR tools is available via the Center Directors' Quick Links web page or at http://ncicb.nci.nih.gov/core/caDSR | |
EVS | At the foundation of the "standards stack" is controlled vocabulary. The NCI is meeting this need through a diverse collection of Enterprise Vocabulary Services (EVS). We develop standard vocabularies for a variety of settings in the life sciences. We also work with vendors to create and improve tools for vocabulary development and curation. The NCI EVS is a collaborative effort of the Center for Bioinformatics and the NCI Office of Communications. The NCI Thesaurus, which is a biomedical thesaurus created specifically to meet the needs of the NCI, is produced by the NCI EVS project. The NCI Thesaurus is provided under an open content license. The EVS Project also produces the NCI Metathesaurus, which is based on NLM's Unified Medical Language System Metathesaurus supplemented with additional cancer-centric vocabulary. In addition the EVS Project provides NCI with licenses for MedDRA, SNOMED, ICD-O-3, and other proprietary vocabularies. |
Oracle Clinical Licenses
NCI has negotiated discounted licenses for Oracle Clinical. These are available now for use by Cancer Centers regardless of whether or not the C3D framework is used by the Center. For information on how to obtain an Oracle Clinical license through NCICB and the associated costs, please contact NCICB Applications Support at NCICB@pop.nci.nih.gov or by phone 888-478-4423 or 301-451-4384.
As the caBIG community continues to grow, additional interoperable tools, infrastructure, and data will be made available via the Inventory section.
