Welcome to USAID/El Salvador’s Website. I am pleased to present information on USAID’s assistance program which is helping Salvadorans in their development and reconstruction efforts. I hope that you will find the website both informative and interesting.

The ties that bind the United States and El Salvador are strong, as evidenced by President Bush’s visit to El Salvador on March 24, 2002. The United States and El Salvador share multiple interests, including a commitment to democracy and private enterprise. Ten years ago, El Salvador embarked on a hard-won process of peace and democratization. Today a democratic and free-market oriented El Salvador is working to achieve growth through economic liberalization and market reforms leading to sustainable job creation.

USAID, through its ongoing programs and support, has been working alongside its Salvadoran partners to help reduce rural poverty, achieve sustained economic growth, foster continued democratic development, contribute to improved primary health care and help control diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB and dengue. USAID’s programs are also increasing access of rural residents to safe water via improving watershed management, providing community education and expanding water distribution systems. Prior to the 2001 earthquakes, rural poverty rates had come down by more than 10 percentage points since the signing of the Peace Accords.

The earthquakes of 2001 affected the lives of over 1.5 million people or 25% of the country’s populationIn response, USAID/El Salvador provided emergency assistance including temporary shelters and emergency supplies for more than 23,000 families, and developed and launched a comprehensive earthquake reconstruction effort.

At the time of his December 2001 visit to El Salvador, USAID Administrator Andrew Natsios announced a $100 million support level in FY 2002 for the Earthquake Recovery Program, bringing the two-year total to approximately $170 million. This demonstrates the priority that the country and the program have within the United States Government and, more specifically, within USAID.

Through all of our programs, USAID is working hard alongside counterparts to promote prosperity for all Salvadorans. I invite you to browse through these webpages to learn more about our programs, their goals, accomplishments and successes.
