Financial Flows Key to Developing Country Growth

The United States is the world's largest single contributor of official assistance to developing countries today. But even at $16.3 billion, our development assistance is dwarfed by the resources flowing into or generated by developing countries from other sources.

Developing countries today have access to a broader range of international financial resources than ever before, and the United States is seeking to enable their most effective use in support of achieving sustainable economic development. (complete text)

USTR Zoellick Consults U.A.E., Oman on Free Trade Talks
Says governments must have clear commitment to market liberalization

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick has consulted with senior leaders of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) about launching negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States.

"[T]he U.A.E. has expressed an interest in possibly negotiating a free trade agreement, and so I wanted to come out personally and be able talk with a number of members of the senior leadership and others, in part to listen and to learn about their sense of what's going on in the economy here, their plans for reform," Zoellick said briefing reporters in Dubai October 13. (complete text)



Agriculture's Veneman Pledges Reduction in Chronic World Hunger
Veneman also touts World Food Day theme of "Biodiversity for Food Security"

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman marked World Food Day October 16 by promising the United States would meet its commitment to help halve by the year 2015 the number of people suffering from chronic hunger.

In a videotaped address for World Food Day, Veneman said the United States is strongly committed to protecting and promoting biodiversity. President Bush has also reaffirmed U.S. support for the G8 Action Plan on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, she said. (complete text)
