Donations to Iraq

General Information

June 18, 2004

We appreciate your interest in making a donation to the people of Iraq. Many individuals and organizations have already made both financial and in-kind donations that are meeting important reconstruction and humanitarian needs in Iraq. While many donations are currently being made directly from U.S. donors to Iraqi recipients, we are frequently asked by potential donors how the Embassy and U.S. Government can provide assistance in transporting donated items to Iraq from the United States.

U.S. Government support of donations frequently requires the involvement of the U.S. military, which places significant logistical and security burdens on Department of Defense staff. As the most difficult part of every U.S. Government-supported donation project is arranging transportation of donated goods from donor to recipient, this can be a costly and complex undertaking for the U.S. Government and donors. All potential donations that utilize U.S. Government resources are reviewed and approved by the Director of Private Assistance - Iraq, working in coordination with the Department of Defense. The Embassy and its staff are not involved in supporting the donation of goods to Iraq.

We hope that the information provided on these pages will help you navigate your way along the Iraq donation process. Please review Needs in Iraq to ensure that what you are considering donating corresponds with an identified need in Iraq.
