Fostering mutual understanding between the people of Iraq and the United States through educational and cultural exchange

Opportunities for Iraqis to Study and Teach in the United States

What? Fulbright Scholarships enable Iraqis to pursue study or teaching in the United States, build leadership skills, and exchange cultural understandings with Americans.

Who? Scholarships are open to Iraqi citizens living in Iraq who

  • hold a minimum of a BA/BS degree;
  • want to pursue graduate study at the master's degree level in humanities or social sciences*; and
  • are proficient in English and able to function easily in academic and social settings.

Scholarship opportunities are also available for


  • junior faculty in the social sciences, and
  • Iraqi students planning to become English teachers, or who are currently teachers of English early in their careers.

When? The deadline for submitting applications is September 14, 2004. Scholarships for students and junior faculty will be awarded for programs beginning in the United States in September 2005.

You may submit your application via email at:Fulbrightiraq@state.gov, or as a hard copy to the U.S. Embassy/ Baghdad.

In addition to information about yourself, the application will ask you to provide information about and describe the following:

  • proposed field of study
  • future plans
  • educational background
  • scholarship/honors/societies
  • teaching experience/research
  • work experience
  • language skills
  • English proficiency
  • study/research objective
  • personal statement
  • 3 letters of reference(teachers/supervisors)
  • academic record/certificate


Where?As a Fulbright Scholarship recipient, you will study at a university in the United States for up to two years. You may name universities at which you would like to study; these placements will be explored but cannot be assured.

CALENDAR- Fulbright Student Competition 2005-06

>May, 2004- Second Fulbright competition opens
>June 1 - 2005-06 application available online
>September 14- Application submission deadline
>September - October- Interviews, TOEFFL, review panel/Bi-National Committee
>November- Fulbright Board of Foriegn Scholarship review; placement process starts
>January, 2005- Scholarship notification begins
>July - August, 2005- Arrive in the United States to begin study program

Benefits- The scholarship covers: 1)tuition at the U.S. university, 2) a living and book/supply stipend, 3) round trip international airfare to the U.S. and return, 4) insurance for the duration of the study program. Fulbright students may also be able to attend special seminars and presentations during their time in the U.S.

The scholarship is provided for the recipient only; dependents cannot be supported by the grant.

Special Notes
TOEFL Testing- You do not need to submit a TOEFL test score with your application; the test will be required only for those recommended as finalists. However, any certified score obtained within one year may be submitted with the application. If you wish to take the test prior to submitting your Fulbright application, you may be able to do so by contacting:

>TOEFL tests are given every Wednesday; to schedule, please notify 48 hours in advance.

Toefl Other Locations- AMIDEAST/Iraq conducted a TOEFL test in Baghdad on June 4th at University of Technology, and they may schedule others. Check newspapers for notices or contact Amideast directly.

*Fields of Study- The Fulbright Program promotes the exchange of ideas and cultural understandings and the development of leaders who can contribute to building Iraqi institutions and services. The study and teaching of humanities and social sciences supports this goal and includes such fields as: anthropology, arts, archaeology/cultural preservation/museum studies, business administration, drama, economics, education, English as a foriegn language, environmental studies, international realtions, journalism, law, public health, public administration, political science, socioloy, psychology, philosophy, religious studies, U.S. history/literature. Other related fields will also be considered.
