U.S. Identifies 39 Groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations
List helps heighten public awareness about terrorism

Secretary of State Colin Powell designated 39 groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, according to a Department of State fact sheet released October 19.

"FTO designations play a critical role in our fight against terrorism, and are an effective means of curtailing support for terrorist activities and pressuring groups to get out of the terrorism business," the statement said. (complete text)



NATO-Russia Defense Meeting Focuses on Terrorism
Efforts to ensure force interoperability to be accelerated, ministers agree

Defense ministers from NATO and the Russian Federation reiterated their countries' commitment to combat terrorism and to accelerate efforts to ensure the interoperability of NATO and Russian forces.

"It goes without saying, of course, that the fight against terrorism, after the horrors of Beslan, is on the top of our agenda," said NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on October 14 in Romania. (complete text)



Zarqawi Group Formally Designated Terrorists by State Department
Decision involves United States, international asset blocks, travel bans

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's group of radical Islamic terrorists is formally designated as a terrorist organization under the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224. Because of the network's links to al-Qaida, the United States and others are asking the U.N. 1267 Sanctions Committee to add the group to its list of terrorist groups subject to international sanctions. (complete text)
