Earth Day 2004 Message Promotes Smart Energy

Earth Day Poster: Efficient Renewable Resources - Smart Energy Choices for the Future.
DOE's Earth Day poster highlights renewable energy and smart energy choices as ways to expand energy supply, create a healthier environment, and increase national security.

"Smart Energy, Choices for the Future" is the theme for the 2004 Earth Day campaign of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). DOE materials promoting this message highlight renewable energy and smart energy choices as a way to expand our nation's energy supply, create a healthier environment, and increase national security.

Executive Order 13123 (PDF 103 KB, 12 pp) requires federal agencies to increase their use of renewable energy, and it called for the Secretary of Energy to set a goal for federal use. Therefore, the Secretary directed that federal agencies obtain the equivalent of 2.5% of their electricity from renewable energy by 2005. Download Acrobat Reader.

Earth Day Promotional Materials

For Earth Day, April 22, the Federal Energy Management Program produced materials to support energy awareness campaigns at federal agencies. Promotional materials include posters, key tags, post-it notes, and sunflower seeds. Agencies participating in FEMP's You Have The Power campaign will receive these items; however, limited quantities of selected items are available to other agencies. Please call the EERE Information Center at 877-337-3463 to request a limited supply of Earth Day materials. Materials will be available to order by March 31, 2004.

You can save energy at your office and home by following FEMP's simple Earth Day tips (PDF 93 KB, 1 pp). Doing a little saves a lot on Earth Day and every day.

You Have the Power

FEMP promotes saving energy every day of the year through its You Have the Power campaign. To learn more about federal energy awareness campaigns and the people who work to save energy and taxpayer dollars at federal facilities—Energy Champions—visit FEMP's You Have the Power Web site.

"Energy Hog" Tips and Games

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham recently launched a national public service advertising campaign to promote energy saving practices. (See the Press release.) The campaign delivers energy awareness messages through the Energy Hog, a "spokes-villain" who represents an energy waster. Through Web-based games and other fun, interactive approaches children and their parents are made aware of energy efficient behavior.

More About Earth Day

Earth Day, established by Senator Gaylord Nelsen in 1970, is an annual event celebrating the earth and our responsibility toward it. The Earth Day Web site contains details on Earth Day history, activity ideas, and events. In addition, Earthday.gov is a government Web site providing information about Earth Day and other related events sponsored by federal agencies.
