Head and Neck SPOREs

SPOREs in Head and Neck Cancer support translational research on cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract and on thyroid cancer. An estimated 37,800 patients will be diagnosed for cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, or larynx in the year 2002. In another 20,700 patients thyroid cancer will be detected. The incidence rate for the first group of cancers is 2 to 3 times higher in men as in women, with the highest rate in male over the age of 40, whereas thyroid cancer is three times more common in women as in men. By the estimates of the American Cancer Society, 11,100 people will die of cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, or larynx and 1,300 of thyroid cancer. The SPORE program introduced SPOREs in Head and Neck Cancers in the year 2001 with the result of three new SPOREs being funded in the year 2002. New solicitations are planned in years 2003 and 2005.
