According to the American Cancer Society, 30,600 new cases are expected in the United States in 2003 approximately evenly divided between acute and chronic types. An estimated 21,900 people will die of leukemia in the same year. An interesting decline of incidence and deaths was observed after the mid-1990s with a rate of 3-4% per year. The first round of applications in Leukemia SPOREs took place in the year 2002, with the subsequent establishment of the first Leukemia SPORE in 2003. This SPORE was named in honor of the late congressman Joe Moakley. The second round followed in 2003. To view the associated abstract, click on the name/address below.
