Pancreatic SPOREs

Although in the last 15 to 25 years, rates of pancreatic cancer have declined in men and woman, over 30,700 newly diagnosed cases, and an estimated 30,000 deaths will be expected in the United States in the year 2003. Pancreatic cancer is the 5th leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Presently, surgery, radiation and chemotherapies are treatment options that can extend survival and/or relieve symptoms in these patients, but seldom produce a cure. Patients with cancers of the pancreas have a particularly poor prognosis, as mortality from this type of cancer is extremely high (5-year survival rate is about 4%). The pancreatic cancer SPORE program was initiated in the year 2002 and three funded SPOREs have been established. New SPOREs focusing on cancers of the gastrointestinal system are expected to be added in 2003, 2004, and 2005. SPOREs in pancreatic cancer focus on any of the several organ sites classified as cancers of the gastrointestinal system, including cancers of the colon, rectum, pancreas, stomach, esophagus, small intestine, liver, gallbladder or other digestive organs.
