Special Searches Using Field Specifiers

You can restrict searches to certain portions of web documents by using field specifiers in your search request. This allows you to search for web pages' titles, urls, embedded hypertext links, and any additional information that is defined in the web pages' meta tags. Web page meta tags are special lines of code in HTML pages that store information about the page including a description, keywords, author, and any other category of information that the author defines for that document. This information is not displayed on-screen, but is available to internet search engines.

The field name should be in lower case, and immediately followed by a colon and search terms. There should be no spaces after the colon and before the search terms.

LINK Field Specifier Example

link:www.sec.gov

Finds pages on the FCC site that contain links to the Securities and Exchange Commission's web site ( any FCC pages with links containing www.sec.gov in their URLs.

SITE Field Specifier Example

site:svartifoss2.fcc.gov

Finds pages on the specific FCC web server svartifoss2.fcc.gov. The site field search examines the "site" part of the URL only. You can use the site field search to bring up all pages on a specific FCC web server.

URL Field Specifier Example

url:contracts

Finds pages with the word contracts anywhere in the page's URL. For example:

http://www.fcc.gov/omd/contracts/

You can also use the url field selection to find out the exact number of pages currently in the FCC Search database. Just type url:http. This number is updated as pages are added and removed from the FCC web site.

TITLE Field Specifier Example

title:"Children's Television"

Finds pages with the phrase "Children's Television" in the title portion of the document.

META TAG Field Specifier Example

technology:television

Finds pages that have an HTML meta tag named technology and with content containing the word television. For example:

<meta name="technology" content="tv, television, dtv, plasma, advanced">

This is an example of a field defined by the meta tag that the creator of the page has included in the HTML code. If you know that a specific meta tag has been assigned and used for the types of pages you are looking for, then you can search for those pages using the meta tag field specifier and the name that has been assigned. In this example the meta tag name was technology, but it could be any other single word made from all small letters. These special purpose meta tags are currently not widely used on the FCC web site.
