FDA's Major Initiatives

The 21st century has presented FDA with unprecedented challenges. To accomplish its mission of promoting and protecting the public health, the agency will need to be innovative and resourceful in the years ahead. To help guide the agency as it moves forward, FDA has created a blueprint that maps out five critical challenges facing the agency and how they can be accomplished. These major initiatives will help the agency use 21st century knowledge to bring medical products and foods safely to the greatest number of people:

Efficient Risk Management -- Searching for new and better ways to reduce risks to public health
Better Informed Consumers -- Helping consumers get truthful information about products they use so they can make informed decisions
Patient and Consumer Safety -- Preventing adverse events involving FDA-regulated products
Counterterrorism -- Responding quickly to terrorist acts and enhancing food security
A Strong FDA -- Maintaining a strong science base to support FDA's risk management responsibilities.
