Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability

The Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability makes recommendations to the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary for Health regarding blood and blood products. The range of issues addressed by the advisory committee includes:

  • the definition of public health parameters around safety and availability of the blood supply;

  • broad public health, ethical and legal issues related to blood safety; and

  • the implications for blood safety and availability of various economic factors affecting product cost and supply.

The advisory committee has met regularly since its establishment in 1997.
