Head-Start Program - The Galveston Laboratory is perhaps best known for its work on captive-rearing of sea turtles. Thousands of people visit our rearing and rehabilitation facilities for these protected species each year. Kemp's ridley hatchlings obtained from Mexico and loggerhead hatchlings obtained from Florida are captive-reared for up to two years, used in research, and then released into the Gulf of Mexico.
Sea Turtle Research - Southwest Fisheries Science Center - Scientists at the La Jolla Laboratory in California monitor the status and aid in the recovery of endangered and threatened sea turtles. They also provide technical advice to other federal and state wildlife agencies concerning these protected species. An important part of this work entails monitoring the annual nesting activity, migration, growth rates, and survival of different sea turtle species and research on ways to reduce fisheries interactions with sea turtles.
NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources - The NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources is charged with the implementation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the Fur Seal Act (FSA) with respect to marine mammal species under NOAA Fisheries jurisdiction- whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions. As part of the MMPA mandate, OPR works in collaboration with the NOAA Fisheries Regions and Fisheries Science Centers to develop and implement a variety of programs for the protection, conservation, and recovery of marine mammals.
NOAA Fisheries Galveston Laboratory - provides scientific information for the management of commercial and recreational shellfish, finfish, conservation of coastal habitats, and protection of threatened and endangered species. Perhaps best known for its work on captive-rearing of sea turtles.
