EarthExplorer: browser specifications

Requirements for Running EarthExplorer

1. Your browser must have cookies enabled.

Browser settings to enable cookies: Netscape (9k)  IE (17k))

EarthExplorer only uses cookies for session tracking by assigning you a temporary ID when you log on. The ID is kept while you access EarthExplorer and is removed as soon as you log off and close your browser. EarthExplorer does not use cookies to collect any personal information.

2. You must be running one of the following browsers.

Platform Internet Explorer Netscape
Windows 95/98/NT/XP 4.0 or higher 4.06 or higher (*Mozilla 1+, Netscape 6.0, and Netscape 7.0 are not supported)
Unix (IRIX/Solaris/Linux/etc.) N/A 4.06 or higher (*Mozilla 1+, Netscape 6.0, and Netscape 7.0 are not supported)
**Macintosh N/A N/A
*Mozilla 1.0+, Netscape 6.0, and Netscape 7.0 uses the JAVA 2 Virtual Machine which does not support the original Java applet security model used with EarthExplorer applets.
**EarthExplorer will not currently work with Macintosh systems due to the following:
  1. IE and the Microsoft Virtual Machine does not support LiveConnect for Macintosh systems.
  2. Old versions of the Java Virtual Machine (Netscape 4.6 and earlier) do not support LiveConnect for Macintosh systems.
  3. The Java 2 Virtual Machine does not support the original Java applet security model EarthExplorer uses.
  4. Signed secure applets don't communicate properly through LiveConnect when using the JAVA 2 Virtual Machine on a Macintosh. See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160274 for more information.
Macintosh users may search for many of the same products at:  http://edc.usgs.gov/webglis. You can also access EarthExplorer using the PC emulation package "Virtual PC" if you have this installed on your system

3. Java Requirements:

Internet Explorer Users
  1. You must be using the Microsoft Virtual Machine. The Java 2 Virtual Machine does not support the original Java security model used with EarthExplorer applets. To determine if you're using the correct virtual machine, see Microsoft Virtual Machine Settings.
  2. Make sure Java is installed in your browser (Instructions).
  3. Make sure Java is enabled Instructions.
Netscape Users (Uses authenticated applets)
  1. Your browser should have Java enabled. Example (9k)
  2. NOTE: EarthExplorer does not work with Mozilla 1+, Netsape 6.0, and Netscape 7.0. These browers use the newer JAVA 2 virtual machine which does not support the original Java applet security model used with EarthExplorer applets.
4. Java scripts must be enabled
