Volunteers Needed for Study of Gesture Recognition

Man using sign language

Researchers at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) are seeking deaf volunteers for a research study examining how the brain distinguishes hand gestures. The study will use brain imaging to investigate the areas involved in processing hand gestures, such as those used in American Sign Language (ASL).

This is an outpatient study that will take place at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. Participants will attend one scanning session, lasting three hours. An ASL interpreter will be available during admission and testing. There is no cost for participation, and volunteers will be compensated for their participation in the study.

You may be eligible if
  • you are 18 years to 80 years old,
  • you are medically healthy,
  • you became deaf before the age of 3 years, or
  • you learned American Sign Language before the age of 5 years.

You may not be eligible if

  • you are pregnant or beastfeeding, or
  • you have a pacemaker or any other type of metal in your body.

If you are interested and meet the eligibility requirements for this study, please contact
