Extraordinary advances in biomedical and behavioral sciences have provided us with new tools to tackle the most difficult problems of oral health. However much remains to be done, as underscored by the report of the Surgeon General, "Oral Health in America". Research discoveries are increasingly being made at the interface of traditional disciplines. We must remain vigilant to ensure that our oral health research work-force reflects the diversity of our nation and is trained at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary sciences.
