Species that have a greater effect on their ecosystems and associated ecological processes than would otherwise be predicted from their relative abundance or biomass alone. This group includes species known as ’ecological engineers,’ such as the gopher tortoise and the beaver, whose activities alter the habitat and, in doing so, modify the fates and opportunities of other species in that ecosystem.
