Our horticulturists report that the following plants are especially interesting during this time period. The Location charts are in alphabetical order according to the Garden/Collection name found in the Arboretum's Visitor Guide. We invite you to discover and to enjoy these ornamental plants. Administration Building Area

Name:            Canna indica (Canna)
Description:    huge foliage with red flowers
Location:        in first grouping of containers on SE terrace of Administration Building

Name:            Curcumorpha longiflora (Ginger)
Description:    creamy white flowers at the base of tall green foliage that look like upside-down pipes with splashes of red and pink
Location:        in first grouping of containers closest to Administration Building windows on SE terrace

Name:            Victoria sp. (Victoria Water Lily)
Description:    large platterlike lilypads, some with rims; undersides have rigid framework of veins and thorns
Location:        Administration Building aquatic pool

Name:            Sarracenia leucophylla (Whitetop Pitcher Plant)
Description:    spectacular insectivorous plants with tube-shaped white leaves and red veins
Location:        SE terrace of Administration Building

Name:            Camellia ‘Snow Flurry’ (‘Snow Flurry’ Camellia)
Description:    medium-sized white anemone shrubs to form peony flowers
Location:        to the left of the Administration Building near the Pyracantha ‘Mohave’ espalier

Asian Collections

Name:            Cimicifuga japonica (Snakeroot)
Description:    2’ perennial with stalks of small white fragrant flowers
Location:        in the bed surrounding the Garden Club of the America cement patio

Name:            Aster tartaricus ‘Jindai’ (‘Jindai’ Tartarian Aster)
Description:    herbaceous plants with small purple flowers and a yellow center
Location:        in the bed located near the parking lot off the grassy path on the right

Name:            Euonymus carnosus
Description:    small trees with pink capsules red fruits
Location:        the first bend on the cement path leading to the Anacostia River’s floodplain

Name:            Heptacodium miconioides (Seven-Son Flower)
Description:    small multiple-trunked tree with white exfoliating bark and clusters of white flowers
Location:        on left side of path leading to the pagoda and in China Valley at the end of the cement path that connects to the pagoda path

Name:            Tricyrtis hirta ‘Miyazaki’ (‘Miyazaki’ Toad Lily)
Description:    2’ arching perennial with purple-splotched white flowers
Location:        in the beds surrounding the Garden Club of the America cement patio

Gotelli Dwarf and Slow Growing Conifer Collection

Name:            Pinus sylvestris ‘Hillside Creeper’ (‘Hillside Creeper’ Scotch Pine)
Description:    24’ x 6’ low spreading evergreen shrub with bluish green needles and very compact foliage
Location:        in front of the Conifer parking lot near the Watnong collection

Name:            Cephalotaxus harringtonnii ‘Prostrata’ (‘Prostrata’ Plum Yew)
Description:    24’ x 5’ low spreading evergreens with dark green color and long-flattened needles
Location:        Gotelli Collection bed 6 near the entrance

Name:            Picea orientalis ‘Nigra Compacta’ (‘Nigra Compacta’ Oriental Spruce)
Description:    30’ x 5’ very low flat-topped evergreen shrub with short dark needles
Location:        Gotelli Collection bed 8

Name:            Juniperus virginiana ‘Pendula Nana’ (‘Pendula Nana’ Eastern Red Cedar)
Description:    3’ x 7’ creeping evergreen shrubs with arching branches and bright green foliage

Name:            Cedrus deodara ‘Pendula’ (‘Pendula’ Deodar Cedar)
Description:    4’ x 7’ creeping evergreen shrub with arching branches and whorl-like needles

Description:    multiple flowering dark pink perennials

Name:            Ilex ‘Sparkleberry’ (‘Sparkleberry’ Holly)
Description:    red berries on small trees
Location:        back garden

Dogwood Collection

Name:            Cornus florida (Flowering Dogwood)
Description:    small deciduous tree with green long oval fruits turning to bright red as they ripen
Location:        along left side of the entrance path going into collection and throughout collection

Name:            Cornus sericea ‘Silver and Gold’ (‘Silver and Gold’ Dogwood)
Description:    deciduous shrub with numerous yellow green stems
Location:        in entrance path to circle facing north; plants on both sides of path leading out of circle

Name:            Abelia x grandiflora (Glossy Abelia)
Description:    semi-evergreen shrub trimmed to 4’ in height with small, dark green, very glossy leaves and small white fragrant trumpet-shaped flowers
Location:        around upper circle as a hedge

Holly and Magnolia Collections

Name:            Ilex ‘Bonfire’ (‘Bonfire’ Holly)
Description:    shrubby plants with dark green leaves and red berries
Location:        in the bed right by the parking lot on the right side trail

Name:            Ilex crenata ‘Piccolo’ (‘Piccolo’ Japanese Holly)
Description:    dwarf evergreen shrubs with small leaves and black fruits
Location:        in the bed right by the parking lot

Name:            Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’ (‘Winter Red’ Winterberry)
Description:    shrubby plants with dark green leaves and red berries
Location:        left of the parking lot by the collection sign

Name:            Ilex x attenuata ‘Sunny Foster’ (‘Sunny Foster’ Holly)
Description:    small evergreen tree with spiny narrow foliage tinged a slight yellow
Location:        in bed right by collection parking area on right side of trail

Perennial and National Boxwood Collections

Name:            Buxus spp. (Boxwood)
Description:    broad-leaved evergreen shrubs with a variety of habits
Location:        throughout collection

Herb Garden

Name:            Capsicum annuum, C. baccatum, C. chinense, C. frutescens, C. pubescens (Chili Pepper)
Description:    over 60 cultivars of chili peppers ranging in sizes, shapes, and colors; colors are yellow, red, orange, and purple
Location:        along the Theme Garden walkway north of the Rose Garden

Name:            Aconitum napellus (Monkshood)
Description:    tall plants with dark blue monk hood-like flowers
Location:        east side of the Holly Border under the Yellow wood tree and behind the Lespedeza

Name:            Chrysanthemum indicum
Description:    short hardy mums with fall-colored flowers
Location:        Asian Garden

Name:            Chrysanthemum pacificum (Silver and Gold Chrysanthemum)
Description:    ground covers with green leaves and small yellow flowers
Location:        Holly Border near weeping hemlock

Name:            Salvia spp. (Sage)
Description:    many different varieties of colors, sizes and shapes
Location:        Salvia Border near Rose Garden

Fern Valley

Name:            Solidago sempervirens (Seaside Goldenrod)
Description:    spray of bright yellow flowers on 3’ plants with waxy leaves
Location:        entrance to Fern Valley in the beach area

Name:            Oxydendrum arboreum (Sourwood)
Description:    small tree with remarkable fall colors ranging from dark maroon to pink
Location:        southern lowlands trail has trees with pink foliage, others found in Fern Valley parking lot, and across the stream

Name:            Rhus copallina (Shining Sumac)
Description:    large shrub with deep maroon fall colors and drooping red fruits
Location:        between prairie and meadow, entrance to meadow, and far end of Fern Valley along roadside

Name:            Euonymus americanus (Bursting Heart)
Description:    5-7’ deciduous shrub, displaying pinkish, warty fruits that burst open to reveal bright red seeds
Location:        on the left-hand side before the shed and throughout Fern Valley

Name:            Penthorum sedoides (Ditch Stonecrop)
Description:    herbaceous plants with interesting pink seed-heads splayed along the top fourth of the 2’ stalk
Location:        multiple clumps found in the entrance

Name:            Ludwigia alternifolia (Seedbox)
Description:    perennial with small alternating leaves, covered with brown seed-heads with a single small hole at the top
Location:        throughout the entrance garden

Name:            Impatiens capensis (Touch-Me-Not or Jewel Weed)
Description:    prolific, succulent annual, now holding ever-fattening green seed pods; gently squeeze one to see where the name comes from
Location:        surrounding the Fern Valley pond and throughout collection

Name:            Tipularia discolor (Cranefly Orchid)
Description:    dormant until recently, newly emerged foliage has a purplish tinge
Location:        not far from the pond, just up the path from the spot where the fallen oak tree crosses the path

Name:            Epifagus virginiana (Beechdrops)
Description:    this parasitic plant feed on beech tree roots and its 8’ tall brown stems are covered with small burgundy flowers
Location:        throughout the collection, found at the base of beech trees

Name:            Pityopsis graminifloia (Silk Grass)
Description:    gray, grass-like foliage, stalks with yellow composite flowers
Location:        new planting at the Coastal Plain
