The data-collection effort will consist of measurements of depth and
velocity at about 80 sites along Buttonwood Embankment suspected to
flow during high flow periods. A newly available, sensitive, low
velocity meter will be used to measure the velocity; standard sounding
techniques will be used to determine the depth; and a very high
resolution Global Positioning System (GPS) will be used to determine
the location.
An initial reconnaissance will be made in October 1996 to examine
established locations where flow over the embankment will most likely
occur. A total of four complete measurements will be conducted,
starting as soon as flow over the embankment begins during the summer
of 1997. Data has been collected in July, September, and November
1997 and periodically during the 1998 water year.
